After a fairly pleasant journey down to Pembrey on Saturday afternoon I was more than ready to walk the track and to contemplate the adventures of the next day - after not being at Pembrey for a year, it was likely that some changes had been made to the track which would need noting.
As predicted, there had been some changes but these did not affect the track or the entry / exit lines to the corner, although the rubble at the side of the track was a slight corner. This was corrected by the morning however when a barrier was put in front of the rubble and muck from where the barrier had once been.
Sunday morning came quickly and after a stress free scrutineering on Saturday night, we were ready to go as soon as the drivers briefing had been completed. I lined up on the dummy grid, with David Ewin in his Fiesta behind me. After being so eager to get in the car and out on track, I was one of the first out and this meant that I was greeted with a very slippy and 'green' rallycross track (due to not being used for so long) and so the practice session was greeted with caution and the hope that by the first heat, the green would have been removed.
Heat one presented a five car grid with Steve Cozens and Mike Howlin on the front row, David Ewin and Stuart Emery on the second row and me on the back row. After managing quite a good start I headed towards the first corner, noticing David Ewin and Steve Cozens behind me (perhaps after watching the wrong set of lights), but was quickly caught by David into the first corner as he frantically applied pressure to me and tried to find a way past. I managed to keep a tidy line through the first corner and kept David behind, whilst trying to catch Mike, Stuart and Gary Dixon. Unfortunately my luck changed on the exit of the loose on the last lap and hit a bump too quickly, resulting in me going off circuit and allowing David, who had been sat on my bumper, to go past and try to chase the others. I pulled back onto the track in front of Steve and managed to finish fifth - after my accident there was no time to try and pass David again - this was not the result we were hoping for.
